Angela Rená Banks forced us to face a new reality as she transitioned from her physical body on Monday, March 27, 2023, and joined her brothers - Gary, Gregory, Darrell, and Dale; and sister, Noel. Known by many names - Big Angie, Boss Lady, Auntie and most importantly, Noni, was born to the late Sally Miles Banks Williams and David Banks on December 22, 1956. Raised with her siblings in the River Terrace community in Washington, DC, Angie was a proud Ram, having graduated from Eastern Senior High School.

Angie’s professional journey started with her own real estate business, but went on to work in the U.S. Department of State. From there, she joined a great team at the Navy Yard Navy Base, but decided to switch gears and make a pit stop at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, D.C.’s Air Force Base Riverview Room. There, she was hailed as the best bartender. During this time, Angie was determined to pursue her passion of food service management, and enrolled in Strayer University. With a degree in hand, she returned to “the Yard.” This is where “Big Angie” was born, and she made long-lasting friendships and memories, all while managing the catering and conference center. She understood her assignment and was able to implement personalized pricing to Navy Yard’s personnel, enticing more use of the facility. “What’s your budget?” became her first question when meeting with potential brides, retirees, or other personnel that needed space to host their events. She worked with everyone to ensure their experience was appealing and memorable. In 2019, Angie, the event coordinator extraordinaire, hosted her own retirement gathering in the very place where she excelled.

Angie married Maurice Simms. However, as life shifted in 1984, they agreed to part ways. In 1995, she found her best friend and forever life partner, Robert “Pop-Pop” Carroll.

There are a few things that Angie was known for, but one of the most important to her was making sure that family and friends got together. She was instrumental in the Miles family reunions, and the River Terrace annual cookouts. If you ever made it to one of Big Angie's parties, you definitely had a good time, and ate good! Traveling was another of her passions, especially to beautiful beaches. Aruba was her favorite, having been there the most.

Cherishing her memory forever are her two daughters, Alena and Deitra; grandchildren, Jamaal, Armani, and Rayonna; brother, Michael; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and guardian angel,Ramona Ramirez. Big Angie, without a doubt, genuinely touched the lives of many family, friends, and wonderful colleagues over the years, and will always be truly missed.
