Audrey Mary Smith (Jones) of College Park, Maryland, departed this life on Saturday, June 18, 2022. Over the last two years her health had declined due to dementia and Alzheimer’s related impairment.
Audrey was born on September 13, 1926, on the eastern shore in Showell, Maryland, to the late William R. and Rita Ann Jones. After completing high school, she married and started her family before migrating to Prince George’s County in the mid 1950’s. In December 1962 she was re-married to Leonard J. Smith until his death in December 2021.

In addition to her parents and husband, Audrey has been predeceased by her siblings and their spouses; her son Morrison Dennis and daughter-in-law Beverley Dennis; her daughter Gracie Ann Drew and son-in-law Edward Drew; and many other family members as well as close friends.
“Mom Mom,” “Aunt Mickey,” or “Miss Audrey,” as she is known to her many family members and friends is survived by her son Monroe Dennis, and her grandchildren: Brian Dennis (Maurine), Andrea Dennis (Keith), Duane Dennis (Esther), Morrison Dennis, Jr (Pamela), and Leonard Drew. Additionally, she lives on through her many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Audrey was a longtime member of Embry A.M.E. Church in the Lakeland community of College Park, Maryland. Over her decades of membership, she formed many close friendships with Church leaders and members and assisted with many of the Church’s functions. She served as Stewardess for 30 or more years. Although she never sought to be a leader in the Church, in the past few years, because she was the most senior active member of Embry, she was named Mother of the Church.
Audrey was known as a kind, loving, caring, and generous person. She was a good listener who cared for and worried about the welfare of her family and friends. Throughout her life, she not only raised and provided for her own children, but she also helped shepherd her grandchildren and oftentimes provided motherly guidance and advice to other neighborhood children and young adults. She was seen as a role model by many, especially by her nieces.

Audrey was playful and had a spicy sense of humor that was only sometimes on display. Especially, she loved to tease her late husband about her “favorite” football team from Dallas and his favorite team, from Washington.
Of course, Audrey loved Maryland eastern shore blue crabs. Whenever she had crabs, there were certain members of the community who had a standing invite to feast with her. Audrey also loved cooking and baking. She will be remembered as always offering a meal or a snack to anyone who visited her home. Even during her last days, she continued to ask her son and caretakers whether they needed her to make them something to eat.
She will be missed dearly.
