Obituary for Bernice Mae Campbell (Wright)

Bernice Mae Campbell of Washington D.C., passed away on May 7, 2024. Born Bernice Mae Wright(NOOK) on October 23, 1933, in Danville, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Clara Mae Riggins Wright and Stepfather, Wallace Grant Wright.

In 1966, Bernice began her career at Woodward & Lothrop, where she worked in the gift-wrapping department. Her time there allowed her to connect with fellow Washingtonians and notable figures in the entertainment industry. Known for her engaging conversation and impeccable gift-wrapping skills, she left a lasting impression on all who crossed her path.

After dedicating thirty years to Woodward & Lothrop, Bernice embraced retirement and devoted herself to serving Jehovah full-time. She spent 13 years pioneering, until her husband of 56 years, Mr. Purcell Campbell, fell ill. Bernice then became his primary caregiver, demonstrating her unwavering devotion and love.

Bernice is survived by her children, Linda (Kevin), Yolanda (David), Purcell Jr. (with his lifetime partner Peaches), Gwen (Patrick), Eric (with his lifetime partner Vanessa), Cookie (Keith), Candy (Kevin), and Mark (Tawanna). She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, as well as six sisters, and a host of beloved relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Purcell Campbell, her daughter Deborah Wimbush, two grandsons, Donte and Kevin Jr., and her granddaughter, Chiquita(CJ… who gave her the precious name “GrannyPooh”)

The family will receive guests at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Capitol Heights, Maryland, on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, for viewing beginning at 11:30 a.m., followed by a service at 1:30 p.m.
