Betty Ruth Brown Nichols was born Jan. 12th, 1948, in Washington DC. She was the beloved daughter of the late Wesley J. and Janet Ruth Lee Brown. Betty was the sixth child out of ten children. She departed this life on June 9th, 2023.

At an early age Betty was taught religious teachings and was baptized at Old Ship of Zion Baptist Church, D.C. and later became a member of Capital View Baptist Church., D.C. She was educated in the Washington, D.C. Public School System and later studied Business Administration at Prince George’s Community College. In 1964, she married the late Charles Nichols, Sr. From that union they had five children.

In 1969, Betty began working for the American Chemical Society as a secretary and then later transferred to the federal government in 1974 where she worked for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Later she went on to work for the Dept. of Agriculture, Prince’s George’s County Department of Aging, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA); where she retired in 2012. She was employed over 35 years in the private and public sector.

Betty cherished and loved her family and friends. She was known for her generosity and giving heart. Betty enjoyed shopping; her favorite past time was going to local thrift stores and flea markets to find hidden treasures. Many may not have known this, but Betty was an avid historian and geneologist. On several occasions she worked on tracing her family’s genealogy and traveling to discover her family’s rich history. Anyone who knew Betty knew how much she loved life and were fond of her annual birthday parties and summer cookouts. In addition to spending quality time with her family Betty loved traveling, bingo, casinos and dancing. She loved life and celebrated it to the fullest!

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Charles Nichols, Sr; son John L. Nichols; granddaughter Zena Nichols; grandson Charles L. Nichols, III; brothers Wesley and John Brown; sisters Mary Johnson, Margie Smith and Janet Oronsaye.

Betty leaves to cherish precious memories her devoted children: Charles Nichols Jr., Donnell Nichols, Riva Alford, Natalie Nichols; 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; sisters Shirley Parker, Josephine Roberts (Charles), Theresa Brown; brother Sylvester Brown; sisters-in-law, Ruth Ann Brown, Dorothy Judd, Lois Jackson, Monica Murray; brother-in-laws , Benjamin Nichols, Jr., Christopher Oronsaye; life-long friend Carolyn Terry and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.
