JB JENKINS WILL NOT ACCEPT FLOWER FOR THIS SERVICE

CARLTON EDWARD McGOWAN
SUNRISE - November 7, 1961
SUNSET - February 21, 2024

Carlton Edward McGowan of 5508 Trout Run in Clinton, MD, departed this earthly life suddenly on February 21, 2024. Carlton died peacefully of natural causes at his residence in Clinton, MD. He was 62 years old. Carlton was often called Pete, a shortened version of Peter Rabbit, a nickname given to him by his mother Grace. Carlton earned a second nickname from his grandmother, Evelyn Lee. She called him “Bushy Head” because of his fine, curly hair, which Carlton rarely made time to comb.

Carlton was born at Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, MD to Clyde William and Grace Lee McGowan, and grew up in the close-knit Carsondale neighborhood in Lanham. He attended Ascension Lutheran School in Landover Hills, MD, Thomas Johnson Junior High School in Lanham, and graduated with the first ever graduating class of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD in 1979. He excelled in track at Eleanor Roosevelt, setting several school records. After graduation, Carlton enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Fort Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. After completing his military service, Carlton worked in DC for the US State Department. After several years with the federal government, Carlton went into the private sector. He moved back to Texas, and into the oil and gas industry, becoming a Right-of-Way Agent. There Carlton was able to utilize his greatest asset, his gift of gab! Carlton’s interests were varied and lengthy. He loved sports, especially his beloved Washington Redskins/Football Team/Commanders! If you were ever around Carlton, you better be ready to talk some football, and you better have some free time, because he wasn’t likely to let you get away too quickly. He loved people. He loved music, especially jazz and funk, and he loved to dance! Carlton was a Parliament Funkadelic aficionado, from Maggot Brain to Flashlight, he knew them all! Carlton also played the trumpet for a time, and probably would have gotten really good at it if he wanted to. The family remembers fondly Carlton on trumpet and our dad on trombone playing “I know My Redeemer Lives” at our church’s (Ascension Lutheran) Easter Sunrise Service at Capital Plaza. He loved meeting people, getting to know strangers, and no surprise, beautiful women. Carlton was married twice. His first marriage was to Sharon Botts. They were both young, and much in love. Maybe too young, as their marriage lasted only a few years. Years later, in 2003, Carlton married Angela Warr. They met at the Capital Jazz Fest, and it was pretty much love at first sight. They eventually separated but were never divorced. Carlton’s final relationship was perhaps his most significant. The McGowan and Sims families were long-time neighbors on Wallace Road in Carsondale. Carlton and Monica Sims-Pinkney grew up together as classmates and friends. When Carlton came home to Maryland after living in Michigan and Texas for several years, he and Monica began a four-year relationship. During this time, they fell in love and were engaged to be married. Monica considered him the love of her life.

Carlton was a big kid at heart, and it showed with the close relationship he shared with his fiancé Monica’s six-year-old grandson, Jaylen. Carlton and Jaylen were “buddies.” They played.

together and sang songs together. He watched Jaylen compete in baseball, football and track, but Carlton also made sure Jaylen was just as competitive in spelling, math, and science. Carlton was more than a buddy; he was like a grandfather to Jaylen.

Carlton is preceded in death by his parents, Grace and Clyde. He is survived by his favorite sister Jodi, brothers Gregory (Kellie McGowan), Bruce, and Kevin (Jon’nae Cousin), his uncle, Tyrone P. Lee, his wife Angela McGowan, his sister-in-law Kellie, nephew Ryan, nieces Briana, Mia, Ava, and Parys, a multitude of cousins, his fiance Monica Sims-Pinkney, her mother Ludie, and his buddy Jaylen, his Carsondale family, and a host of friends and classmates.

A memorial celebration of Carlton’s life is scheduled for May 18, 2024, at 1:00 pm. The memorial will be held at the Carsondale Playground. Carlton was one of the organizers of the recent Carsondale Reunions held at the playground, and it is the ideal venue for his memorial. We are asking that in lieu of flowers, cards and well-wishes should be sent to:
