Obituary for Carolyn F. Bailey (Fleming)

Carolyn Fleming Bailey was born in Richmond, Virginia on August 30, 1947, to the late Horace Herman and Daisy Winston Fleming. Our beloved Carolyn, 76, lived in Springdale, Maryland and entered eternal rest peacefully on April 10, 2024.

Carolyn received her formal education in Virginia, graduated with honors from Virginia State University with a Bachelor of Science, earned her Master of Arts degree from University of Cincinnati, and achieved a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of South Carolina in School Psychology. Carolyn worked as a school psychologist with Richmond Public Schools and Montgomery County Public Schools also as an adjunct professor at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Virginia State University, and Howard University in Washington, DC. Carolyn was a member of The Association of Black Psychologists (ABPSI), charter member of ABPSI in South Carolina, member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and affiliated with National Association of School Psychologists, and National Coalition of 100 Black Women. She retired from the profession she loved after 42 years and enjoyed traveling, reading, watching basketball, serving in organizations, exercising at the pool, and spending time with family and friends.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents (Horace and Daisy Fleming), and her dear brother Horace III. Carolyn is survived by her daughter Toacca (Bill) Rutherford and son Jayson Bailey; granddaughters Imani, Malia, and Amali Rutherford; sister LaVerne Coles and brother Kelvin (Mable) Fleming; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by, Tyrone Bailey, her only husband, dearest loving friend and father to her beautiful children. Friends were always important to her and once a friend, it was lifelong from high school, college, and her professional worlds.

Homegoing services are open to the public and will be held at J.B. Jenkins Funeral Home, Hyattsville, MD on April 24, 2024 from 3:30pm to 5:30pm and at Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church, Richmond, VA on April 25, 2024 from 6pm to 8pm. Donations to the Jayson Fleming Bailey Scholarship at Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church are welcome in lieu of flowers.

For the Wednesday 4/24 service:
Omega Omega Service will begin at 3:30pm conducted by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Montgomery County Alumnae Chapter. Visitation will begin at 4pm. Funeral service will begin at 4:30pm (scroll for details).

For the Thursday 4/25 service:
Visitation begins at 6pm. Celebration of Life service will begin at 6:30pm with reception immediately following in the fellowship hall at the Church.
