Obituary for Carroll "Brent" Green

Carroll “Brent” Green was born on August 26, 1956, in Riverdale, South Boston Virginia, to the late Henry and Marion Green. On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, Carroll “Brent” Green transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord.

Our beloved Brent” was the youngest of seven children. Being “the baby” of the family, he truly earned the title of “Mama’s boy.” At an early age, Brent was baptized in a creek, becoming a member of Memorial Baptist Church in South Boston, VA. When Brent and his family relocated to Washington, DC, in the 1960s, he rededicated his life to Christ at Zion Baptist Church, located in the District. He attended public school through junior high in the DC Metropolitan area. His mother started to see changes in Brent, and not all were good. At that point, his parents made a decision to change his environment, and sent him to live with his brother, Robert, in Boston, Massachusetts. There, Brent was bused to schools during the forced integration of Black and White children.

Each day, his school bus experienced bricks thrown at it by local White children yelling racial slurs. The insight Brent gleaned from his brother helped him to discover his strengths and virtues, and he graduated from Hyde Park High School, in Boston, MA. Brent returned to Washington, D.C., working alongside his father in his gardens and landscaping. Brent’s dad recognized the gift God had given him with his hands. When Brent did odd jobs around the house—installing ceilings fans, assembling grills, snow blowers, front and rear tillers, his father was very impressed, so he suggested Brent attend the Tesst Technology Institute. Brent did just that, and received a Certificate in Electronic, and became a Senior Electrical Technician.

Brent was united in Holy Matrimony to Jacqueline Griffith in 1981. From this union, two children were born, Tai Green and Calvin Green. However, the marriage ended in divorce. Their children were the joy of Brent’s life.

Brent helped and served others in his life. He was the caretaker for his parents for many years until they passed. All of Brent’s sisters and brothers were there for him, as they are a very close family. Brent’s older sister, Priscilla was always her mother’s helper with Brent, but after their mother’s death, she stepped in like a mother and continued to be a positive influence on Brent, helping him to see more of his strengths and virtues. He used his electrical skills to help his brother, Robert Green with a prototype design and construction start up solar project by building and testing of patented solar energy systems for residential application. He also helped his brother Ted with renovations to his home in Takoma Park.

Our beloved Brent was a man’s man and a ladies’ man, and he was affectionately known as, my man, buddy, pal, homey, Unc, Uncle, Batman, brother, my guy bro and my bruh. When asked why he didn’t use his first name, Carroll, he replied, “it sounds too much like a girl’s name and I didn’t want to be teased.”

Brent was a saxophone player in a 9-member band called Mugokenyata. At the invitation of his oldest brother Robert, his entire band traveled to Boston to record an album in his basement recording studio during a week-long stay.

For those who knew Brent, they described him as loving, kind, sweet, thoughtful, helpful, funny, never focused on himself, easy to talk to, caring, thoughtful in his responses, a supportive son, brother, father, and friend, had a great sense of humor, and loved a quick joke. His daughter, Tai, described him as an “organized neat freak,” however she said she is missing that gene. She also said, “Daddy would come to my elementary school at the end of the week and sit with me after class to clean out my chaotic desk.” He loved his children and grandchildren, and was very proud of them. He enjoyed bowling, football (an avid Commanders - formerly Redskins - fan), eating crabs, playing chess, and dogs.

Everyone who knew Brent knew of his personal challenges. However, in the last three years, he overcame most of them, and we had our beloved brother back.

Our beloved Brent leaves to cherish his memories—two children, Tai (Calvin) Wingfield of Washington, DC, and Calvin (Lola) Green of Baltimore, MD; five grandchildren, Cammari Green, Caleb Green, Cristyn Green, (youngest) Caiden Green, and Calvin Wingfield III; five siblings, Robert (Michelle) Green, Lorenzo Green, Priscilla Francis, Ted (Svetlana) Green, and Serita (Larry) Newell; one godson, Kevin Green, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. (His sister, Cynthia Bernice Green, died during infancy.)
