Obituary for Dr. C. Anthony Mayo

Cephars Anthony Mayo (“Tony” or “Butch”) was born on July 23rd, 1947, in Washington, DC to Cephars Mayo and Marie Bobo. His early years were spent at his grandparent’s home in Chapel Oaks, MD, until his parents moved to the Fort Myer Army Base in Arlington, VA. Tony attended Fairmont Heights Elementary School and later Hoffman Boston Elementary School.

Tony’s family then relocated to Washington, D.C. where he attended Terrell Jr. High School and Dunbar Sr. High School. At Dunbar, Tony played football for the Crimson Tide, graduating in 1966.

Following high school, he attended the University of Oregon and played football for The Oregon Ducks. But Tony’s first love was baseball. The University of Oregon did not have a baseball team, so he made a deal with Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon to play baseball for them during the summer semester.

In 1967 Tony married JoAnne Gamble. A son and daughter were born of that union, Leslie Mayo and Anthony Mayo.

Tony was drafted by the San Francisco Giant’s baseball franchise in the 37th round of the 1969 MLB draft. His positions were 2nd and 3rd baseman. He played in the Giant’s minor league briefly before an injury ended his baseball career.

He continued his education, eventually earning a Master’s degree in Social Work from Howard University and a Doctor of Social Work from the University of Maryland.

After obtaining his doctorate, Tony was employed as a social worker for Montgomery General and Providence Hospitals. He later worked as an Employee Assistance Provider (EAP) for Teamster’s Local Union 639.

In 1989, Tony purchased an office building in Mt. Rainier, MD and opened C.A. Mayo & Associates, a private counseling and employee assistance provider business. His major clients were commercial driver unions including UPS, Metro Bus, Giant Food as well as the International Sheet Metal Workers, bakers’ unions, and private transportation companies.

Tony was an avid golfer and in Mayo of 1999 he became a member of The Woodmore Country Club. In 2000 he joined Tour Partners, an amateur golf organization and began to enjoy his passion at private golf courses across the country at one time having a 10 handicap. His favorite courses to play were at Pebble Beach in Pebble Beach, CA and the “Blue Monster” in Doral, Florida.

In 2004, Tony was joined in holy matrimony with Leatha (“Lea”) Victoria Landers gaining a stepdaughter, Jacqueline Gholson, and a tribe of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Shortly after his marriage Tony became a member of The First Baptist Church of Glenarden, serving in both the Male Chorus and the men’s 50 and over ministry, “Half Time”. He also acted in the church’s annual Easter production for several years. Over their years of marriage and until his illness Tony and Lea enjoyed traveling, attending Redskins, Nationals and Wizards games and golf tournaments, and celebrating joyous occasions with family and friends.

Tony leaves to mourn his wife, Leatha, daughter Leslie Mayo and son Anthony Mayo. Stepdaughter, Jacqueline Gholson (Carlton). Brothers Jasper Mayo, Darnell Dailey, Reginald Dailey; sister Cynthia Harris. Two brothers, Ronald and Calvin Daily preceded him in death.
