Obituary for Charlie E. Hickmon

Charlie E. HIckmon (Nick), was born on September 30,1946 in Hopewell, VA to Charlie and Mamie Griffin. He grew up in Washington, DC sister, Charlene and brothers, Martin, Madison, Charles, Malcolm and Robert. Nick was also known for having a strong work ethic. He was a true leader and independent. As a middle age child, he had his first job as a paperboy delivering newspapers and later working at a gas station. Those habits continued into his teenage years and later into adulthood.

After graduating Eastern High School in 1964, Nick landed a job at the Post Office until he entered the U.S. Army in January 1966. Following his military service, Nick returned to the Post Office and pursued his education at The University of District of Columbia where he earned an Associates Degree. Throughout his life, Nick contributed to various jobs working with DC Transit(Metro), Griffin Oil Co, MD MVA(retired) and driving his taxi cab. Nick's ingenuity and creativity was also very evident. He was an extraordinary handyman and unusual constructor/creator of ANYTHING he wanted or needed. Always making some sort of gadget out of something the average person would consider trash.

Nick married Georgetta Nelson on December 30, 1966. From this union came three children: Michael, Reginald and Monica. As a father, he wanted to keep his children active. As soon as they were eligible, he enrolled the kids in the Glenarden and New Carrollton Boys and Girls Clubs participating in a variety of sports. He also had a passion for the outdoors. Nick created cherished family memories through vacations filled with skiing, camping, beach trips, etc and most notably his love for fishing.

Nick departed his life on February 15, 2024 at his home in Upper Marlboro, MD. He was surrounded by his family until his final moments. He was preceded in death by this parents, sister and three brothers. He leaves behind his wife of fifty-seven years, Georgetta; two sons: Michael(Dawn) and Reginald(Toby); daughter Monica and two brothers: Malcolm and Robert. His legacy extends through six grandchildren: Michael, Loy, Gerald, Janae, Jalen and Javon. Nine great grandchildren: Aiden, Anniyah, Alexander, Aeris, Rion, Me'Lani, Javier, Julian and Levi. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews. His spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
