Daryl Mayes, age 53, was born January 10, 1970 in Stamford, Connecticut to the union of George Mayes III and Mary L. Mitchell, and peacefully departed this earthly life on Friday, November 17, 2023 at his home in Edgewater, MD.

Despite being a man of few words, Daryl was well-respected and loved by family and friends and epitomized the quote, “a man of many words, is a man of few thoughts. However, a man of many thoughts is a man of few words and meaningful action.” He was truly deliberate and diligent in all his undertakings, especially his many acts of kindness and love as a husband, father, and friend.

Daryl spent his childhood in Connecticut where he graduated from Central High School in 1988. After graduation, he relocated to Washington, D.C. to attend Howard University as an accounting major. There he joined the Howard University-University Center Intramural Billiards League, placing first and second in numerous tournaments. He was indeed a formidable opponent at the pool table!

Following in his father’s footsteps, Daryl pursued a career with the United States Postal Service joining the organization in 1995. He transferred to the Postal Inspection Service in 2011 where he received numerous awards and commendations including the Special Achievement Award in 2017 for outstanding work performance. He remained committed and of service to the Postal Inspection Service until the time of his passing.

In 1998 Daryl met the love of his life, Montora, and they married on November 9, 2002. From this union a daughter, Mackenzie Danielle Mayes, was born and was the apple of his eye. He was always supportive of Mackenzie in all aspects of her life, especially basketball and chess club. Daryl loved and followed Christ always encouraging and guiding his family seeking the Lord’s counsel, oftentimes sending Montora and Mackenzie encouraging messages throughout the day to let them know he was thinking about and praying for them. Daryl genuinely loved spending time with his family, with most of his time spent at home being a devoted and loving husband, father, and friend. He particularly enjoyed a good comedy show, listening to music, and cheering on his Pittsburgh Steelers.

Daryl will forever remain in our hearts and be remembered for his walk of perseverance, strength, and faith. May he continue to inspire us to embrace each day with love and gratitude.

He was preceded in death by: father, George Mayes III; brother, George Mayes IV; paternal grandparents, George Mayes II and Adeline Mayes; maternal grandparents, William and Angeline Mitchell.
