Obituary for Edward Eugene Hobbs

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Edward Eugene Hobbs, affectionately known as “Ed”, Hobbs”, “Poppy Ed”, “Daddy Hobbs”, “Eddie Fresh”, and “Fast Eddie”, who left this world on June 2, 2023. Born on March 2, 1944 in Ocilla, GA. Edward was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many.

Hobbs was a proud member of the graduating class of 1962 Miami Northwestern Sr. High, where he gained accolades in the classroom and on the football field and the track. Northwestern is also where he met the love of his life, Lela. Edward’s life was filled with accomplishments including his service in the Air Force where he received an honorable discharge as a Communications Electronics Specialist. He was an entrepreneur at heart, resulting in a successful career. He owned a TV Repair and Record Shop and worked in research and development for Cordis Corp where he helped design, develop, and build pacemakers. He owned S&Y food store named after his two daughters, which offered employment to the community, and easy access to household needs close to home. He didn’t believe in retirement and worked the rest of his life as a private contractor in Maryland after the loss of his wife Lela. He was well-known in the community for providing high-quality work at fair prices.

Ed had a green thumb, his home was always filled with plants. He enjoyed gardening until the groundhogs came around. Hobbs was well-known for his cooking, he was a devoted member of Reid Temple AME Church, where he served as a cook for the church’s community events and a faithful member of the Mighty Men of Reid Choir. His faith remained paramount throughout his life.

Fast Eddie's personality was best described as fun-loving (fast to show love to others), passionate (fast to share his opinion about the things he cared about), kind (fast to share his resources and lend a hand), and witty (a fast talker who loved to laugh). Edward was a shining example of kindness, generosity, and purposeful living inspiring those around him to use their God-given talents and live intentionally. His passing has left a void in the lives of those who loved him, but we take comfort in the celebration of his life and the cherished memories he left behind.

Edward is survived by his daughters, Shevellanie Lott (Jerome) and Yolanda Cox (Richard); his grandchildren, Leah Lott, Malcolm Lott, and Mika Cox; and his nieces, Sandra Fowler (Larry), Kimmie Wilcox, and Charlie Mae Smart; his Cousins Evelyn Hobbs and Lorenzo Hobbs; his Sister-in-Law Bettye Cepeda; and his Brother-in-Law James Lee Williams, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lela Hobbs; his nephews Erica Smart, and Clinton Smart, his sisters, Bessie Williams, and Doris Smart; his brothers, Walter Williams and Willie Williams; his mother, Mattie B Hobbs; and his father, Archie H. Hobbs.

Edward's legacy will continue to be cherished by those who knew him and his impact will be felt for years to come. As we gather to honor his memory, let us remember the lessons he taught us and strive to live our lives with the same unwavering kindness and purpose.
