Ernest Samuel Jones, Sr.

January 12, 1946 – March 9, 2024

Ernest Samuel Jones, Sr. was born to the late Ophelia R. Jones on January 12, 1946, in Alexandria, Virginia. He was raised by the beloved family of the late Theodore Clark and the late Lucy Bradley Clark, Rustburg, VA, whom he fondly called Grandma and Grandpa. Ernest’s maternal grandparents were the late Henry M. Jones, Sr. and the late Ophelia R. Jones, Alexandria, VA. Ernest passed away on March 9, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC. His cause of death was Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a fatal and rare disease.

Ernest is preceded in death by the following relatives of the Rustburg/Lynchburg, VA area; Aunts & Uncles-Bertha Lee Clark, Christine Clark Nowlin, Olivia Smith, Charlie Clark and James Clark; and Cousins-Barbara Nubie (Jesse, Sr.), James William Smith, Jr., Alice Hunt, and Janie Wilson.

Ernest Samuel Jones, Sr. was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who touched the lives of all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Elsie Jennings Jones, Chesapeake Beach, MD whom he married on February 14, 1966, in Campbell County, Virginia. In addition, Ernest is survived by his son, Ernest Samuel Jones, Jr. (Theresa), Waldorf, MD and his daughter, Eudora Armida Jones, Jefferson, MD. Also, he is survived by his grandchildren, Erin and Elliot Jones, Fredericksburg, VA and step grandsons, Tyree Staton, Te’Ron Staton, and Bruce Gettys, Jr., Waldorf, MD. In addition, Ernest is survived by the following first cousins who reside in the Rustburg/Lynchburg area: Mary Fleshman (Lance) whom he highly regarded as his sister, Vanessa White, Garland Clark, Annette Smith, Larry Clark, Janice Marshall, Bertha Morgan, Kathy Clark, Kevin Clark, and a host of other cousins, nieces, and nephews. Also, Ernest held dear a sister-in-law Odell J. Moore (Alonzo, III), Washington, DC.

In addition to his studies in high school, Ernest enjoyed participating in sports, especially baseball. He was awarded many trophies for outstanding athletic performances. He earned his diploma from Campbell County High School, Rustburg, VA in 1965. Ernest was drafted by the United States Army in 1965 and he served as a Military Policeman. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1967.

Ernest was employed as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service. Afterwards, he was employed by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, DC. During his 21 years of service at MPD Ernest served as a K-9 Officer for the 6th District, and a Bomb Unit K-9 Officer for the Special Operations Division (SOD). Upon retiring from the MPD, Ernest was employed by the United States Supreme Court in Washington, DC as a Police Officer. The U. S. Supreme Court awarded Ernest with a gold pin for 45 years of service in the federal government.

Ernest was a devoted member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Evington, VA and he also attended local churches. Ernest was inspired by professional golf, and he attended several professional tournaments in the Washington, DC area. His love for sports extended to cheering for local professional sport teams.

Ernest Samuel Jones, Sr. will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He will remain in our hearts forever. May Ernest rest in eternal peace.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Ernest’s life will be held on March 29, 2024, at 9:30 AM in the chapel of J.B. Jenkins Funeral Home, 7474 Landover Road, Landover, Maryland 20785. He will be laid to rest at National Harmony Memorial Park, 7101 Sheriff Road, Hyattsville, Maryland 20785. The Jones Family would like to thank family and friends for their condolences and assistance during this difficult time.
