Frederick Boysie Stokes, (affectionately known as Freddy to many) entered this world on September 2, 1950 at Freedman’s Hospital, now known as Howard University Hospital. He was the son of Louise and Boysie Stokes (who preceded him in death). He grew up in a wonderful, loving, family oriented community on Duckett Town Road, Bowie Maryland. He attended Bowie High School in Maryland where he excelled in track and field. During his teens, Freddy moved to New York and completed his education at Brandeis High School.

While living in New York, he met Kathleen Lynn Baskerville, soon to be Stokes, the love of his life. They embarked on a true love of adventure that lasted over 50 plus years. They had a special romance that endured all tests of time. They taught us to, “Love from the gut,” it’s the only way you’re gonna weather the many storms you encounter in life.

In 1970, as fate would intervene, he received his mandatory draft notice to report for duty to the US Army, which he served with distinction.

In 1972 after his honorable discharge from the military, he worked for the US Postal Service and became a true member of the Elite Postal Family, making special friends he cherished to this day. Freddy retired in 2009 after 37 years of service. Freddy had a love of music that encouraged him to pursue a hobby of DJ-ing. He attended the Metropolitan Disco Communication Academy, based in Washington, DC, which catapulted his phenomenal reputation as the music man, “Disco Funk International.” His side-kick who accompanied him to many of his gigs, was his sister-in-law Karen, affectionately known as Special K.

Freddy was a very loving and giving person and had a kind spirit. He had a sense of humor that was infectious and his smile would light up a room. He was one of the coolest Dudes on the planet. Freddy was often referred to as “Smooth.” He was always willing to lend a helping hand. Freddy was a great cook. He enjoyed cooking for his family, especially his grandsons. He was famous for making his “Pots.” Freddy loved baking and frying fish. Everyone raved
about it.
Freddy is survived by his wife, Kathleen Lynn Stokes, his son, Frederick Stokes II, his brother Charles Howard, his grandsons Frederick Stokes III, Roosevelt Stokes, Giamane Gardner, and Nicholas Reynolds. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Dele’ Husbands, Karen Johns, Roxanne Hart and Frances Baskerville; and his brothers-in-law Edward Hart, Raymond Johns and Sandy Hart. Freddy is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. A special shout-out
to those friends he dearly loved. Preceding him in death was his sister, Helen Howard and brother, James Williams.
