HAZEL BURNETTA CHAPMAN

Arrival: 12/30/1941; Departure: 1/26/2024

Hazel Burnetta Chapman, was born to Everett and Olga (Haynes) Chapman in British Guiana (now Guyana). She received her formal education there from St. Ambrose Anglican elementary school through the Carnegie School of Home Economics. Her mastery of culinary skills was evident in every meal she prepared. She was the fifth of eleven children. In her quiet way, she taught us grace, charm, hospitality, selflessness, kindness, and strength.

In her early twenties, Hazel immigrated to the USA. She relocated to New York where she began her career in the medical field as a Nurses’ Aide and then a Birth Certificate Clerk at the Brooklyn Hospital. She later moved to Erie, Pa as an office assistant in the Urology Clinic and as a Phlebotomist at St. Vincent Medical Center. After ten years, she moved her family to Maryland in 1988 to begin working at the Washington Hospital Center as a Phlebotomist. Hazel advanced her skills and remained dedicated. Eventually, she retired as a Lab Coordinator in 2010. Her twenty-two years of service to the Washington Hospital Center is an accomplishment we are all proud of.

Hazel’s christian walk started in Guyana as a teenager. In adulthood, she rededicated her life to the Lord as a member of the Evangel Missionary Baptist Church under the Leadership of Rev. DeWayne G. Parker. She was one of the “Sweet Sixteen” which is a group of the first sixteen Evangel members to transition over to The New Macedonia Baptist Church, Rev. Patrick Walker, Sr. Pastor. Unfortunately, her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease did not allow her to participate in services. However, she continued to embody the Fruits of the Spirit.

Hazel was preceded in flight by her parents Everett and Olga Chapman; siblings Bernadette, Grace, Aubrey, Edward, and Charles Chapman, And Joan “Pansy” (Chapman) Beckles. She leaves precious memories with her daughters Rochelle (Errol) Hamilton and Kristen Chapman; grandchildren Andrew and Astrid Wilson; siblings Yvonne Moore, Lawrence (Claire) Chapman, Desiree Chapman, and Mazine (Timothy) Lofton. Twenty-eight nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and great nephews, and a host of treasured cousins, friends, and acquaintances.

Hazel, we all love and miss you deeply.
