Helen Delois Kates was born January 10, 1937 in Goldsboro, North Carolina to the late Sudie Lee Kates and Harold Edward Dawson, Sr. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother James Kates and half-brothers Harold Edward Dawson, Jr. and Bernard Dawson. She is survived by four cousins, Annette Dawson Lanier, Carolyn Kates, James “Jerry” Kates, William Lee Kates, Sr. and a host of nieces and nephews.

Helen received her Bachelor’s degree from Elizabeth City State Teacher College in 1959 where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and moved to Washington, DC after graduation. Helen began her career as an educator with District of Columbia Public Schools while earning her Master’s degree from Georgetown University. Helen enjoyed being an educator and continued working as a substitute teacher for many years after she retired.

Family, friends and her District Heights community will remember her fondly for her love of 60s music, traveling, computer games, bowling and local sports. After suffering a stroke, you could always find Helen sitting in her favorite chair in the kitchen watching TV while sipping on a cold Pepsi.

She was a devoted friend, a warm and giving person, generous and kind. She knew she was blessed and never hesitated to lend an ear or financial support whenever she could. She will be missed by all who knew her.
