Obituary for Ida Mae Douglas (Lee)

Ida Mae Douglas, born on June 7, 1931, in Chester, South Carolina, to the late Reuben Miller and Carrie Lee, peacefully passed away on January 24, 2024, at the age of 92 in Landover, Maryland.

Ida received her education from the Chester County school system. On December 24, 1954 she married the love of her life, Sylvester Douglas, Sr. They were blessed with four children born to this union: Marie, Sylvester Jr. "Sly", Delores, and Terry. Ida and her husband moved the family to the Washington, DC Metropolitan area in 1956. She dedicated 22 years of her life working as a waitress at the Harvest House restaurant and later as a sales associate for F. W. Woolworth Company at Landover Mall until her retirement in 1994.

Ida was a devout member of Hemingway Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church since 1979. She found solace and strength in her faith and actively participated in the Senior Choir, the Missionary Society, the Lay Organization, and the Pillars. Her favorite scripture was Ephesians 6 v. 1-3.

Ida was a meek, mild-mannered, and reserved woman who had a great sense of humor. Ida was thoughtful, quiet, and possessed a quiet strength that inspired those around her. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and was known for her strong family values.

In her free time, Ida enjoyed cooking Sunday dinner, baking sweet potato pies, and tending to her garden. She took pleasure in planting flowers in her yard and found great joy in spending time with her family and friends.

Ida is survived by her loving children: Marie Douglas, Sylvester “Sly” Douglas Jr., and Delores Lumpkins (James Lumpkins, Jr.). She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: La’Shion Douglas Pondexter, Michael Lumpkins, Stephanie Lumpkins, James Lumpkins III, Terrell Douglas, and Tyrone Douglas. Additionally, Ida was blessed with great-grandchildren: Kameron Pondexter, Zachary Pondexter and Nehemiah Lumpkins. She also leaves a host of other relatives and friends to cherish her memory . She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sylvester Douglas Sr., her daughter Terry Douglas, and her sister Gertrude Miller.

Ida Mae Douglas will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 10:00 am, followed by a service at 11:00 am at Hemingway Memorial AME Church located at 6330 Gateway Blvd, District Heights, MD 20747. The funeral arrangements are being handled by J B Jenkins Funeral Home in Landover, Maryland.
