Obituary for Janice Eileen Richardson (Owens)

Janice Eileen Richardson was born on January 2, 1956 at Prince George’s Hospital in Cheverly, Maryland. She was the sixth of seven children born to the late James and Anna Owens.

Janice was educated in Prince George’s County public schools. She attended Fairmont Heights Elementary School, Mary McLeod Bethune Junior High School, and Fairmont Heights High School. Upon receiving her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Maryland Baltimore, Janice served as a pediatric nurse at Children’s Hospital. She later provided dialysis care at a center in Washington, D.C as well as GBMC Hospital. Janice ultimately specialized in occupational nursing, having worked for the United States Postal Service, The Washington Post, and most recently, the Drug Enforcement Administration until she retired in 2018. Janice was known for providing exceptional care and compassion to her patients.

On December 3, 1977, Janice married her high school sweetheart, Tyrone Richardson. From this union, they had two daughters, Taryn and Krystin. Janice was a loving and devoted wife and mother. Her greatest accomplishment was her family and being able to witness her eldest daughter become a physician and her youngest daughter become a judge. Affectionately known as “Queen,” Janice was a doting grandmother to Lauryn and Larry Whitehurst, III.

An integral part of Janice’s life was her faith and devotion to the Savior. Janice was an active member of the Assembly for Worship. She served as a member of the church’s board, the ministry team, and led the church in praise and worship. Like her mother, Janice possessed a special anointing for prayer and was often called upon to pray for countless people. When confronted with the devastating blow of a cancer diagnosis, Janice’s faith in the Savior remained steadfast and unrelenting. She boldly proclaimed that she was “better each day,” and indeed, she is now better.

Janice was the nucleus of her family. She loved family gatherings and preparing spreads of food for her loved ones. She also enjoyed shopping, traveling, gardening, line dancing, hand dancing, and playing bid whist, dominoes, and scrabble. She will always be remembered for her no-nonsense demeanor, elegance, and unwavering faith.

Janice departed this life peacefully on April 17, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Anna Owens, her sister, Adriane, and her brother, Edward. She leaves behind to cherish her precious memory, her husband of forty-five years, Tyrone; children, Taryn (Larry) and Krystin; grandchildren, Lauryn and Larry; mother-in-law, Marie; father-in-law, William; siblings, Johanne, Daren, Charles, and Darryl; sisters-in-law, Veree, Reda, Mischelle, Tanya, Julia, Sonia, and Bernadette; brothers-in-law, Harold, Larry, William, Clinton, and Mike; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
