Jannease Johnson (Brown), a beloved wife, mother and sister passed away on December 8, 2023, leaving a legacy of love and laughter. Born on July 31, 1974 in Gary, IN to Gregory Sr. and Valarine Brown. She was the second of four children. Jannease was affectionately known as “NeNe” to her Gary family; “Mickey” to her work family; and “JJ” to her Maryland family.

Jannease attended Gary Community Schools taking horticultural classes at the Gary Career Center. She graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1992. Jannease relocated to Washington D.C. after visiting relatives in the DMV. She began her career at the Library of Congress, as a contractor in 1995, with Serials and Government Publications as a “Binder”. In 1999, she began working in the Copyright Office mailroom. Jannease joined the Copyright Acquisitions Division in 2005. She was promoted to supervisor where she trained new specialists in termination notices and special handling requests.

Jannease attended Washington Street Church of God as a child with her mom and siblings. She was a member of the Children’s and Youth Fellowship choirs. She enjoyed attending Vacation Bible School and the annual youth convention in various cities. Jannease accepted Christ as a young adult. She united with Victory Christian Baptist Church in Washington D.C. under the tutelage of Pastor Barbara Wood. Jannease was also a virtual bible study member with Pastor Mike and other members of Washington Street Church of God. Her favorite scripture was Romans 8:38-39.

Jannease met the love of her life, Ahmed, at the Library of Congress, while working in Library Services. They dated a few years before joining in holy matrimony in 2007. Jannease and Ahmed enjoyed traveling with other couples. They went on fishing expeditions, couples’ retreats, and other adventures. The couple also enjoyed music, dancing and karaoke. Family and friend gatherings were a hallmark of their home, a place where warmth and laughter filled the air.

Jannease and Ahmed had two children: Malachi and Amaya. Jannease and Amaya enjoyed shopping, going to the nail shop, and doing their hair. You could often find them at the Beauty Supply store because Amaya was her mom’s personal beautician. Malachi loved cooking with his mom and playing board games like Yahtzee which, she always won! Jannease and her family looked forward to their visits to Indiana, every 4th of July. Food, fellowship and the “FIREWORK SHOW” are a yearly tradition at the Brown’s home.

Jannease was full of life, had a great sense of humor and an infectious smile. Some of her hobbies included reading and dancing. She was a “health guru”, exercising and eating healthy on a daily basis. She would always ask: “Where are your green vegetables? Jannease would have her sisters and cousins do workouts and take a walk around the neighborhood when she visited home. She was a Master Chef, following in the footsteps of her father. Jannease taught both Malachi and Amaya how to cook. The family loved and enjoyed her fish tacos, baked salmon and sautéed spinach dishes in addition to several other entrees.

Jannease was preceded in death by her father Gregory Brown Sr. She leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband of 16 years, Ahmed Johnson; her children: Malachi and Amaya Johnson all of Upper Marlboro, MD; her mother

Valarine Brown of Merrillville, Indiana; three siblings: Sherease, Gregory Jr. (Karen), Jervae (Terrance), all of Merrillville, IN; her devoted mother-in-love Yolanda Haywood (Elbert), father-in-love, Larry Johnson (Carolyn)and special Aunt Yvonne Haywood. Sisters-in-love; Terry, LaShawn (Darnell), Ngina, Makeda (Barry), Ayana (Nathaniel); brothers-in-love: Warren (Angela), Larry, Najee; and Uncles: Donald (Diane), Leonard (Valerie) and a host of treasured family and friends.
