On November 5, 2023, Jannie Bell Arkwright Smith was called to heaven by our Lord. She was born April 1,1928 to Ben Arkwright and Janie Green Arkwright, both deceased in Savannah, Georgia. Jannie was the fifth child of seven children: Sam Arkwright, Paul Arkwright Sr., Bennie Arkwright, Annie Lou Blanton, Emmanuel Arkwright, Mitchell Arkwright (all deceased).
Jannie was educated in the Chatham County School System. She completed her GED and continued her education to become a Psych Tech in Nebraska and a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor at Washington Hospital Center. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to her family as well as many others. She retired from the hospital after 16 years to help care for her grandchildren. She always wanted to go back home to Savannah to live, but could not leave her children and family behind.
Jannie Bell was baptized at an early age and was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist
Church in Savannah Georgia. She joined Ebenezer AME Church while living in Anchorage, Alaska, and continued her membership in the AME church when the family moved to Maryland. In her later years she joined Reid Temple which was closer to her home in Bowie Maryland. She enjoyed especially participating with the Golden Reid
Senior Group at church.
Jannie was married to Air Force Sergeant Felix B. Smith Sr.of Gary, Indiana for 44 years. This union was blessed with two daughters Phyllis and Zelphia, and son Felix Jr.
She loved being a military wife as it gave her an opportunity for new experiences in England, Alaska, and across the US. She always said “That this little country Georgia Peach was blessed to see the world”.
Jannie was preceded in death by her husband Felix Sr. and daughter Phyllis. She
leaves to cherish her memory, daughter Zelphia & husband Thomas Hutchinson, son Felix Jr. & wife Vanessa; six wonderful grandchildren, Kenneth Haygood, Tamelia Hutchinson, Daryl Hutchinson(Lisa), Jamie & Jordan Smith; six beautiful great grandchildren, Shontay & Elijah Haygood, Camrin, Kaitlyn, & Conner Hutchinson, and Leigha Scarbrough.
