Joseph Lee Gerald, Jr. Obituary

Joseph Lee Gerald, Jr., was born on Saturday, May 7, 1977, in Washington, D.C., to the late Doretha Lee Stancil and the late Joseph Lee Gerald, Sr. Known affectionally as “Joey,” he grew up in the Northeast section of Washington, D.C., surrounded by a large community of family and friends.

Joseph graduated from McKinley Technology High School in 1995. While in high school, he started an internship at the Government Printing Office (GPO) with their police force. Impressed by his performance, they hired Joseph to stay on beyond the end of the internship while he enrolled at the University of the District of Columbia.

Joseph’s experience at GPO and his empathy, compassion, and ability to connect with people led him to the field of law enforcement. His first full-time security job was at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC. As ambitious as Joseph was, it wasn’t long before he rose to the level of Special Police Officer (SPO). He excelled at his work and consistently scored high marks at the gun range.

Joseph spent nearly 30 years working at numerous federal government agencies under Homeland Security. He was currently working at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and KR Security. Joseph also worked for the Department of Justice (DOJ), Paragon, and SECTEK, where he was a supervisor.

To know Joseph was to love him. Other than being an extremely hardworking man, he was deeply caring and giving. Joseph wouldn’t hesitate to help someone in need or generously cover a restaurant tab out of the goodness of his heart. Other than laughing and making others laugh, he loved gaming, going to the movies, listening to R&B music, a good story, watching Investigation Discovery (ID) documentaries, and fine dining! Joseph was particular about cleanliness, everything had to be in its proper place.

Family was central to Joseph! Being a good father was important to him. He could be stern but also show off some old-school moves in a dance-off with his kids. His love for his partner, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and so many others was undeniable.

Left to cherish Joseph’s memory are many: his partner Naomi Afua Osei, and three children Anthony Kofi Osei, Nicholas Osei Adjei-Ababio, and Campbell Michelle Osei; ex-wife Kawana Gerald, and three children Nicole, Tommie, and Michelle Gerald; grandchildren Legacy, Zayden and 1-week old Xiomara; siblings Darlene Gerald, Timothy Gerald, Carol Gerald, and Isaac S. Lawson, Jr.; and a host of aunts, uncles, family members and friends. Joseph was preceded in death by both parents and sister, Wanda Gerald.
