Kenneth Howard “Kenny” Washington departed this world peacefully on December 4th, 2023, after a brief battle with lung cancer in Washington, DC. His strength and determination were forever evident through his fight, up until the very end. Despite the pain, Kenneth still made sure his family was taken care of.

Kenneth was born to George (Washington ) and Elizabeth Logan on May 16th, 1948, in McBeth, South Carolina. Kenneth was educated in the Berkeley County Public School system, earning his high school diploma in 1966. In 1968, Kenneth made the honorable decision to join the United States Army to take part in the conflict in Vietnam. Kenneth served honorably for three years and was recognized by the Army for his meritorious service. In 1973, Kenneth joined the ranks of the District of Columbia Department of Corrections, where he served for 28 years. In his time in Corrections, Kenneth worked his way up the ranks and held multiple positions, such as prison guard, Drug Interdiction Officer, Commanding Officer of Lorton’s Emergency Response Team, up to Deputy Warden. Kenneth retired in December 2001.

In retirement, Kenneth enjoyed his retired life, but found various hobbies to occupy his time. Besides being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Kenneth worked as a high school football official, as well as a high school softball umpire, and he served as a Reserve Officer with the Metropolitan Police Department from 2003-2011. Additionally, Kenneth was an accomplished member of the King Solomon Lodge for over 30 years. When not engaged in those activities, you could find him on his back porch, cigar in hand, listening to music and reading the daily news, always ready and willing to dispense knowledge and advice.

Kenneth was survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Washington, two sons, Kenneth A. and Derek Washington, his grandson Kenneth A. Washington Jr, and his granddaughter Vanessa Diane Washington-Valentin, as well as 5 sister-in-laws, and 5 brothers-in-law
