Obituary for Kevin Edward Claggett

Kevin Edward Claggett departed this life from the comforts of his home in Greenbelt Maryland at 10:22 am on May 25, 2023 at the age of 60.

Kevin, also known as “Kevi”, was admired by many, but most definitely loved by all. He grew up in Hyattsville Maryland, attended Ridgecrest Elementary, Rollingcrest Junior High and High Point High School. He made friends wherever he went and was always happy to help. He was a jack of most trades. He could paint your whole house using one, 5 gal bucket of paint and his beloved Purdy paint brush. He could mow and manicure a lawn to golf course precision, pack a 6 bedroom house into a 16 foot box truck, and build practically anything. He loved planting, gardening and most of all fishing. Kevin could and would fish in any kind of weather. He would fish all day, all night, and if the spot he fished wasn't “hittin”, he would pack up and move to another location, to do it all again.

Kevin was a talker. He could talk to anybody about almost anything and at great lengths. He was once challenged to be quiet for 10 minutes, he couldn't do it, he broke at the 4 minute point. He was quite the connoisseur of, and foster father to, “found” objects. He would rescue and restore abandoned tables, chairs and benches to their former glory. He would save shovels, screwdrivers, chains, bungee cords, road salt and turtles from the mean streets and highways of the DMV (District, Maryland Virginia).

Kevin loved to shop, he could smell a sale. It didn't matter where the sale was, big box, outlet, last chance; side of the road-he was there. He once went into Safeway, just after Halloween. He found the corner where they had discounted the candy 90% off. He (being the diabetic that he was) bought about $200 worth of candy for about $50. He also once went into Lowes and spent $70 on six boxes of light bulbs (twelve bulbs total). Each light bulb was guaranteed to last for 25 years. Andrea made him take those back real quick.

Kevin loved to cook. His favorite was chili (which he always made lots of, too often [he did share]). He was a master at barbecuing. He was the one person people always wanted on the grill. He could bake his butt off. He baked so much that he picked up the nickname,“CookiePie.” He loved God, his family, and his fish (wet babies) - and you’d better not mess with none of them.

Kevin’s greatest accomplishment was earning his GED (2018). His fondest memory was traveling to Texas to see his son, Marcus Edward Claggett play Nose-Tackle where he made a tackle that helped Team Maryland win the 7th grade championship (2012). His proudest moment was being able to pin his son, Michael Edward Claggett, Sergeant (2014).

Kevin is preceded in death by his mother Shirley Claggett, his brothers Ferdell and Mark “Jeff” Claggett. He is survived by his father George Claggett Sr., beloved wife Andrea “Shug”, three children Derek Augustus, Staff Sergeant (SSG),Michael Edward Claggett, Marcus Edward Claggett and his bonus kids Andre Kevin Willis and Nichole M. Boone; brothers George “Stimey” (Anita), Sean Keith, Thomas “Scoogy”, Eric “Buck” (Lavanda), only sister Theresa, sister-in-law Wanda Claggett, special cousins Vanessa “Vandie” Wiseman; Terry Wiseman and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and nephews family and friends.

Kevin was a special soul, kind, generous, talented, thoughtful and loving. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
