Obituary for Leonard Anthony Riggs

Leonard Anthony Riggs was born December 12, 1954, to the late Leonard Sedley Riggs and Geraldine McFarlane Riggs. He departed this life on January 23, 2024, in Washington D.C. He was born in Harlem, New York and the family migrated to the Bronx where he spent his early years before they settled in Westchester County, Mount Vernon, New York in his late adolescence. He was educated at Our Lady of Grace School, Mount St. Michael’s Academy and later received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business/Marketing from Manhattan College in 1976.

After graduating, he began a long career excelling in Marketing, Sales, Management and Educational services. Years of experience include Mobil Oil Corporation, Xerox Digital Solutions, Canon U.S.A and the International Conglomerate OCE U.S.A. He pivoted to the financial services industry in 2004 and became an agent for the Lincoln Heritage Insurance Company, and later became a Managing General Agent. He was CEO of L. Riggs and Associates. The driving mission of his business was to empower, inspire and educate employees who have a passion for assisting seniors in legacy and final expense planning. He was a multifaceted recipient.


In 1985, he married Gloria Capel in Mount Vernon, New York. In 1989, Leonard and family moved to Bowie Maryland and established a life there. Outside of his career and family, Lenny’s interests centered on sports and community work. His favorite sports teams were the Washington Wizards and the Redskins (now the Washington Commanders). He also served on the board of Luke C. Moore Opportunity Academy, one of the four public alternative high schools in the District of Columbia.

The legacy Lenny leaves behind is one of mentorship, generosity and sharing his love for the Lord. His joyful and kind-hearted nature made an impact on everyone he met.
Lenny will be remembered for being a devoted husband of 41 years to his wife Gloria, a loving Father to his children and a supportive grandfather to his grandchildren.
His beautiful spirit will continue to live on in our hearts, as he is in a place without suffering, wearing his crown and rejoicing about his promotion from earth to glory!


He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Gloria M. Riggs and their dog, Oliver; his two children, Tonya Jarvis (David) of Bowie, Maryland; and Christopher Riggs (Fiona) of Brooklyn, New York; two grandchildren, Cayla & Chelsea Jarvis; his brother, Walter B. Riggs; his sister, Judith A. Riggs, along with Aunts, Uncles, Nephews, Cousins, and a host of relatives and friends.
