"Beloved Matriarch Linda Carrol Witter, 72, passed away February 11, 2024, with her family by her side.

She was born January 20, 1952 in Rock Hill, South Carolina to the late Willie “Bill” Mobley and Jessie Mae Johnson. She was raised alongside her siblings Willie James Mobley, Vivian Elaine Mobley, Robert “Dink” Johnson, Timothy Clyde Johnson, and Lora Ann Benjamin.

Linda attended Emmett Scott High School, an all Black school, before graduating from Rock Hill High School in 1968. Shortly after graduating, she moved to the Washington DC area, where she received her nursing degree in the mid 1970s. Linda settled in Montgomery County, Maryland where she lived and worked as a registered private nurse until her passing.

Linda was a pioneer of her family, uprooting her life in the rural south to go to school in the north and provide a stable home for those she loved. This not only extended to her mother and children, but to any family and friends who needed a place to stay, or a home cooked meal. She loved gathering folks together, and did so through holidays, cookouts and Sunday dinners. She was an avid reader, gardener, and watcher of westerns. She loved talking to her grandchildren on Facetime.

Linda is survived by four children: Jesse Ballard Jr, Makeba Eustacia Mongold, Rashad Malik Ballard and Emisha Tichelle Ballard. She is also survived by three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving daughter Melinda Ballard.

Celebration of life will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. at the J.B Jenkins Worship Center in Hyattsville, MD. A repass will be held at Makeba’s house (please reach out to get the address).
