Obituary for Margaret M. Lyles

Margaret Marylee Lyles was born in Washington DC, on April 18, 1941; to Margaret Clarice Wallace. She departed this life on Jan 5, 2024, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring MD.

Margaret was the first born of 13 children. She was raised by her maternal Grandmother, Gladys Sloan who she was very close to. She was baptized into the Catholic faith at a young age. She grew up in N.W. Washington DC and attended DC Public Schools.

Margaret was a very pretty, smart, strong willed, sometimes mischievous young lady, who at times needed a little course correction and in her family, with all her aunts and uncles, she got it. She grew up to be a very responsible, honest, hardworking, generous, young woman.

Margaret was married in her early 20s, to Roy Lyles. She also became a step mother to Roy's daughter Sheila (Tessie) Lyles. She was widowed when Roy passed in 1978.

She loved music and dancing and would often go out and "cut a rug," with her cousins at local Hand Dance Clubs. So, it was no surprise when she met "Rico Suave" Neal Dent; an oldies DJ and music aficionado. From their union Margaret had a beautiful baby girl, who she named Karen Dent. The two joys in her life were Karen and her Grandson Kalen. Margaret would volunteer at Karen's elementary school, twice a week, before going to work in the evenings. She would also run errands on the weekends for Karen’s paternal grandfather, who was visually impaired.

She had an affinity for work and always held a job. One of her first jobs was at Press Intelligence Inc, a newspaper clipping service; she also worked as a contractor with the Dept. Of Agriculture. On March 7, 1988, she began working at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel on Connecticut Ave. in DC. She retired from Marriott Wardman Park Hotel October 3, 2015. While working for Marriott Margaret built many lasting friendships that she cherished. She would talk, laugh and joke on the phone with her "Marriott Family" for hours.

Margaret was a fashionista. She always dressed well and back in the day, when she was young and fly, she loved wearing her black, I. Miller, sling back shoes, called nineteens. Her hair was always styled and she wore very little makeup--as she didn't need it.

She enjoyed: playing cards, dancing, cooking, gambling at Dover, and watching TV; especially QVC. In her later years she enjoyed many You Tube cooking shows. Margaret herself was an outstanding cook. If you needed cooking instructions or a recipe, she was your go to person on food.

In 1988, she was so excited to purchase and move into her own condo, on Randolph St. in Petworth, N.W. DC. She lived there until her passing.

She is preceded in death by her Grandmother Gladys, her Mother Margaret, her Sisters Brenda and Linda, and her Brother George a.k.a. Junior.

She is survived by her Daughter Karen, her Grandson Kalen; her Sisters Betty, Barbara and Shirley and Brother David. She leaves to mourn, a host of other relatives, friends and colleagues.
