Obituary for Adeline Bernadel

Marie Adeline “Didine” Bernadel was born on March 1, 1927 in Port- au- Prince, Haiti. She was the eldest of three children born to Maurice Damas and Béatrice Déjean Damas.

Didine attended “Sacré Coeur” an all Girls School from grade school through High school. She briefly taught as a teacher at a private school where she had to show the students how to appreciate her youthful baby face :) She then moved on to become a secretary for the Director of the Customs Department of Haiti where she stayed for 42 years, eventually working her way up to being the Executive Secretary. Didiene managed a team of women whom she trained and taught in the profession. Although she took her work very seriously, she had a unique sense of humor and would often get a laugh by placing highly elected officials on hold before transferring their call.

She focused on excelling in her career and personal affairs before getting married at 32 to Luther Bernadel Sr. Didine may have been considered a “late bloomer” in comparison to women of her generation but still had a strong sense of identity. From this marriage she had three children, Luther, Geneviève and Réjeanne. She was always the rock of her family especially when the family later transitioned to owning and managing a sugarcane business. Outside of taking care of the home and family, Didine never stopped learning. From taking french cooking classes to earning a certificate in photography, she was always exploring her creative talents.

Didine migrated to the United States in 2009 just one month before the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, which flattened the family home. She resided in Hyattsville, Maryland with her daughter and son until her passing. On arriving in the US, Didine’s life was guided and rooted in her Christian faith and she had a heart for service to others. She was an active member at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir and always participated in church activities.

On Sunday February 19th, 2023 Adeline passed from labor to reward, leaving us to cherish her memory. She is predeceased by her husband Luther Bernadel Sr, daughter Geneviève Bernadel and niece Beatrice. She leaves to legacy her son: Luther Bernadel Jr, daughter: Réjeanne Bernadel-Juste, step-daughter: Patricia B. Biela, Nephews: Patrick Damas, Fritz-Maurice Damas, cousin: Nicole Damas, grand-children: Patricia Biela, Venancio Biela, Rachelle Bernadel, Joffrey “Jojo” Juste, Rebecca (Becca) Bernadel, Noah Bernadel, great-grandchildren: Anaiah Bernadel, AmaraChi Biela and many great nieces, nephews and church family and friends who loved her dearly.
