Marlene Lavern Mitchell, the oldest of six children, was born May 27, 1947, in Washington, D.C. to the late Reverend Robert A. Fletcher, Jr. and the late Carretha Y. Fletcher. She was preceded in death by her sister Deborah Brawner and her youngest brother Nathan Fletcher.

Marlene accepted the Lord as her personal savior at an early age. She loved the Lord. Her favorite scripture was Romans 8:35-39. She was educated in the District of Columbia Public school system and was employed with the Office of Personnel Management for 51 years. She retired from the Retirement Eligibility Services Division in 2017 where she was a blessing to a multitude of family, friends and strangers seeking retirement information.

Her hobbies included reading, shopping, word puzzles and crocheting. She also loved her gadgets. We called her the gadget queen. She loved sending cards for birthdays, holidays and other special occasions. She lived her life unselfishly. Christmas was her favorite time of the year. She was a very caring and giving person who always put others before herself. That same sweet spirit led her to enjoy doing things for her family and friends. She had no children of her own but was a mother figure to so many young people which included her nephews, nieces, young people on her job and children of her close friends. She tried to instill in them the values of life to help them become productive citizens. She shared the gospel with them verbally and by the life she lived. She loved to travel and some of her most memorable trips were with her sister Debbie and close friends.

Marlene’s illness was brief. Her transition was a surprise to us but not a surprise to God! She is survived by her sister Deaconess Linda Etheridge (Deacon Ronald), Deaconess Terri Peyton (Deacon Charles) brother, Robert A. Fletcher, III, and sister-in-love, Annie Fletcher; nephews, Gregory P. Brawner, Michael Brawner and Gary Banks; nieces, Natalee Fletcher and Lauren Green; great nephews, Gregory G. Brawner, Tyrone Johnson, Kemonte and DeMonte Banks and Aaron, Karson and Zion Fletcher. She is also survived by many lifelong, cherished friends (too many to name), relatives and friends.

Marlene was truly a light in the darkness and will be missed by so many. When she ended a telephone conversation, text message or left your presence, she would always say “love and hugs”. So, “love and hugs” from Marlene.
