Mildred Mozingo Thompson, 94, peacefully slipped away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, surrounded by her loving family to reunite with the love of her life of 54 years, the late James Preston Thompson. She was born on November 22, 1928, in Wayne County, North Carolina to the late Gurney and Varrah Price Mozingo.

One devoted sister, Theresa Mozingo Edwards; and three beloved brothers, Gurney Howard, Thurman Rose and Milford Byrd Mozingo, preceded her in death.

Mildred was educated in Wayne County Public Schools and graduated from Pikeville Training School in the Class of 1945. Hers was a family of devout Christians who were members of Greenleaf Church of Christ. Although quiet and introspective, Mildred ventured from the comforts and familiarity of home to expand her horizons in Washington, DC. With a strong commitment to personal development, she completed secretarial and business classes that prepared her for several employment opportunities. These culminated with a 25-year career at Riggs National Bank where she retired as an Operations Officer.

A chance encounter in the elevator of the Cromwell Apartments on Ogden Road in Northwest Washington, DC where they both lived, led Mildred to the love of her life, James “Jimmy” Thompson (Valentine’s Day was their first date). Marital vows were exchanged in 1967 and they soon moved to Hyattsville, MD. The couple shared a mutual devotion, love and commitment to each other for more than 54 years. They enjoyed traveling and spending quality time with family, friends and neighbors. Most of their summers were spent near the Blue Ridge Mountains (Amherst) or in Cumberland, MD near the Allegheny Mountains.

Mildred was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church. For many years she was a faithful choir member, served as Co-Chair of the Hospitality Committee and taught Vacation Bible School. She always lent a helping hand at Thanksgiving and Christmas to prepare baskets for the needy and gift boxes for children overseas.

During her formative years, she developed interests and values that remained throughout her life. Mildred was a nature lover who enjoyed caring for her indoor plants and working outdoors in the flower beds (not a weed or stray leaf to be found in those beds). She maintained a pristine household where everything was orderly and very pleasingly arranged. She was an excellent cook. Meals at her home were healthy and nutritious with emphasis on avoiding fried food (except for an occasional fried chicken meal). Concern for personal health was further evidenced by her exercise regimen which included ten one-arm pushups on each side, well into her seventies. She demonstrated this feat with perfection to a shocked audience at a baby shower!!! Photography was a favorite avocation for many years. Mildred was an avid reader and surrounded herself with books of all types which were on display throughout her home.

Mildred leaves to cherish her memory; one brother, Reotis Mozingo of Rocky Mount, NC; three sisters-in-law, Ophelia Thompson of Washington, DC, Gail Thompson of Amherst, VA, and Hattie Thompson Ward of Las Vegas, NV; five nephews, Herbert Edwards, Gonzales Mozingo-Johnson, Keith Mozingo, Terrie Mozingo and Ron Thompson; seven nieces, Brenda Roberts, Patricia Mozingo, Margaretta Howard, Kim Mozingo Flanagan, Tonya Mozingo-Ware, Kristal Mozingo and Alyssa Mozingo; and a host of loving extended family, wonderful friends and caring neighbors.

Mildred and Jimmy always enjoyed an afternoon beverage together. Hers was a cup of coffee while his was a cup of tea. They are relaxing together once again.
