Obituary
Dr. Rufus Oladipo Elemo, Ph.D. (72) passed away on May 06, 2023 in Mitchellville, Maryland, USA.

Dr. Elemo was born into the noble families of Elemo and Sapetu Obe of Igbara-Oke, Ondo State, Nigeria on August 11, 1950. While growing up, he was fondly referred to as Obelawo (Obe) because he was chubby as a child. He attended St. Paul’s Anglican Primary School and Anglican Grammar School, Igbara-Oke before proceeding to the United States for his baccalaureate degree in petroleum engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla, completed in 1974. He then earned his M.S. from Louisiana State University (1976) followed by his doctoral degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Texas, Austin in 1978.

Upon returning to Nigeria, he was joined in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Eunice (Owoyemi) Elemo on December 06, 1980. Their union is blessed with three children, Olufunmbi Elemo-Kaka, Babakayode Elemo, and Olushola Elemo, and one grandchild, Hannah Mopelola Kaka.

He was a gentleman-scholar. During his 40+ year academic career, he served on the faculty of many engineering colleges and mathematics departments, including: University of Ibadan (Nigeria), University of Oklahoma, North Dakota State University, Bowie State University, University of Maryland University College, Catholic University of America, the University of the District of Columbia, and Prince George’s Community College.

He had a great love and attachment to family and his hometown of Igbara-Oke. He served as president of the Igbara-Oke Citizens in the Americas (ICA) Association for multiple terms.

He was a man of humble disposition and great contentment. His love for and faith in God was unshakeable. He stared death in the face with courage and conviction of his eternal destiny. He was loved by all, who knew him to be trustworthy, highly dependable, very generous, and self-sacrificing.

He is preceded in death by his parents Emmanuel O. Elemo and Hannah (Obe) Elemo; senior sister Chief (Mrs.) Janet Olufunmilayo Oluwasanmi; and elder brothers Bolade Elemo and Chief Olasehinde Elemo.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Janet Olufunmilayo Oluwasanmi Foundation (JOOF), which was founded by Dr. Elemo in 2019 to support a computer center he constructed at his alma mater (Anglican Grammar School, Igbara-Oke) in honor of his senior sister. Donations should be made via Paypal (PayPal.Me/ROEJOOF) or CashApp ($ROEJOOF).
