On October 9, 2023, Saleem Nashid Uqdah was called to peace and rest.

Saleem, nee’ John Paul Lawrence Johnson, the first child of the late Willie Mae Felton and Henry Love Johnson, was born September 26, 1945 in Cordele, Georgia. His father moved them to Washington, D.C. and Saleem lived with his cousin, the late Anne and Charles Davenport, who raised and loved him as a son in Northeast D.C. He graduated from McKinley Technical High School in 1963. Immediately after graduation from high school, Saleem enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He would later serve in the D.C. Air National Guard for several years. Saleem changed his name in the mid-1970s based on his spiritual beliefs.

Saleem was a successful personal fitness trainer for over 35 years. He was passionate about health, nutrition and exercise. He was married to Rachel Locus for 39 years. Saleem was a devoted husband, a great father and a loving grandfather. He embraced all the effort required to support and nurture his family.

For several years, he volunteered as a scout leader, coordinator and coach for the local community center youth basketball programs as well as a trainer with high school and AAU basketball teams. He was also the president of the neighborhood civic association.

Saleem will be remembered for his big smile, sense of humor and always having time for conversation and friends.

Saleem is survived by his wife, Rachel Locus; children, Saleem II (Luashawnna), Jamal, Nina (Dulai), and Tariq (Ka’Shauna); four grandchildren, Hasin, Umi, Kasiq, Avi (and Kash); his sister, Mary Jean Ross in Cordele, GA and brother, Milton Griggs in Seaford, DE; mother-in-law, Dorothy Locus in Goldsboro, NC, and sister-in-law, Cheryl Locus in Durham, NC. Saleem was further blessed with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, especially friends and family who ministered to him during his illness.
