Obituary for Sheryl Sellers

Sheryl Rashida Arnette Sellers loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend and Pan-Africanist became an ancestor on November 22, 2022 at the age of 63.

Sheryl was born to Ernest Sellers and Gurley Mae McDowell-Sellers on April 13, 1959 in Chapel Hill, NC. She is survived by her older brother Andre Sellers, her children: Andre (Kwafele) Sellers (wife: Teiya Sellers), Tsepo Sellers (wife: Krista Sellers), and Awet Sellers, her grandchildren, aka “grandma’s babies”: Inaya Smith-Sellers, Dorian Sellers, Naasir Sellers, Adrianne Sellers, Naliyah Sellers, Elizabeth Sellers, Isabella Sellers, and Isaac Sellers, as well as a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, “adopted” children, cousins, friends, and family pets.

In 1973, to the delight of her future children, Sheryl moved from Durham, NC to Bladensburg, MD. While residing in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Sheryl's devotion to Pan-Africanism was cemented when she joined the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party (A-APRP). While a member, she married but later separated from Mwalimu Keita, who became a lifelong friend and confidant.

Sheryl was smart and ambitious–always working to be the best for herself and her family. She earned her GED while pregnant, would later earn an Associate of Art in Microcomputer Systems, a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management, and her Juris Doctor (law degree) from the University of Baltimore. At the time of her passing, Sheryl taught in the Prince George’s County Public Schools and at the same time worked on a degree in Education.

“Life...ain’t been no crystal stair,” for Sheryl, through life’s adversity she lived a beautiful loving, caring, and generous life. She raised her children in a home she purchased; she was a devoted and loving grandmother, earned multiple degrees, particularly her law degree; and loved to travel, inspiring her children to do the same. She was a proud African woman who taught her children to be proud of Africa and of African people worldwide.

Sheryl’s beautiful, kind and gentle spirit was adored by many, and her presence will be dearly missed.
