Shirley Stokes McDougle Baldwin was born on May 30, 1938 in Robeson County, North Carolina. She was blessed to have not one, but two sets of parents. She was the beloved daughter of the late Taft Stokes, Sr. and Lena L. Stokes Livingston. And she was the adopted daughter of the late Henry and Virginia McDougle. Having two sets of parents also blessed Shirley with nineteen siblings.

In 1960, Shirley married the love of her life Edward Lorenzo Baldwin. This marriage produced two sons, Edward and Clarence. Shirley and “Ed,” as she affectionately called him, were happily married for 63 years.

In 1955, Shirley graduated from Halifax County High School in Weldon, NC. Following graduation, she attended St. Agnes Hospital of Nursing at St. Augustine in Raleigh North Carolina, the first school to offer professional training for black nurses in North Carolina. Shirley’s dedication to nursing led her to later do further studies at Bowie State College in Maryland.

Shirley had a deep compassion for helping others. She loved her work as a Registered Nurse and continued to enthusiastically practice her profession until her retirement in 1997. During her years of nursing, Shirley practiced her skills at George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC, Freedman’s Hospital in Washington DC, The Hospital for Sick Children in Washington DC, Methodist Home of DC, and Sharon Nursing Home in Olney, MD. Her final years of employment were spent with Medlantic Long Term Care Corporation, where Shirley was able to provide private and compassionate care to individuals.

Shirley attended Evangel Cathedral in Upper Marlboro, MD. Her love of the Lord was evident to those who knew her well. Her goal was for others to see Christ in her while not being “pushy,” except with her husband and children! Her grandchildren fondly recall the many visits with Shirley and the expectation that at some point during those visits, they would be reading a scripture that had been preselected by “Grandma.”

Shirley’s warm smile and peace-loving spirit will be greatly missed by her friends and family. But we can find peace in knowing that her soul is with God, that her body is pain-free, and that her spirit is now watching over all her loved ones.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Edward Baldwin, her two sons: Rev. Dr. Edward L. Baldwin Jr. (Auretha) and Clarence R. Baldwin (Rev. Katrina, Esq.), goddaughter Jennifer Thorpe-Lewis, her sister Jean Livingston Stackhouse, her brother Leon Livingston, sisters-in-law: Lena Stokes (Taft Jr, deceased) and Martha Livingston (Harvey, deceased), four grandchildren: Dr. Edward L. Baldwin III (Jessica, M.D.), Aaron D. Baldwin (Ari), K. Precious V. Baldwin and Angel Grace Tondalay Baldwin, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
