Shirley Johnson Garner, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin and dear friend transitioned from this life at her home in Beltsville, Maryland on Monday, May 15, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Marvelous Johnson and her brothers Robert “Bobby” and Gerald Johnson.

Shirley was born September 30, 1932 in Washington, D.C., where she attended public schools. She graduated from Armstrong Technical High School in 1950. She went on to attend Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, Massachusetts.

She was a member of DuPont Seventh Day Adventist Church in Washington, D.C.

Shirley married Clarence Garner on September 17, 1955. The union was blessed by two children, Clarence “Pete” and Paula.

Shirley had a successful career with the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Agriculture, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare which later became the Department of Education. She retired in 1986 with 32 years of federal service. After retirement she went to work at several temporary agencies. Her last job was babysitting her great-nephew Luke. They spent many days and hours watching Lion King and Elmo's World. He called her Ma instead of Aunt Shirley.

She joined the AARP, Penn Branch Chapter #3473 in Washington, D.C. where she was the Corresponding Secretary. She enjoyed her involvement and time with the AARP. The Corner Boys were her childhood friends who maintained a relationship throughout their adult lives.

Shirley had a number of passions. She enjoyed the Washington Mystics and the Commanders (Redskins) sports teams. She enjoyed macrame, ceramics, sewing, jigsaw puzzles, word search puzzles and gardening. She loved going to fashion shows, plays in New York, ski trips, cruises, and concerts. Her favorite televisions shows were The View and Judge Judy.

Left to cherish her son, Clarence “Pete” (Gabrielle), and daughter, Paula; grandchildren, Kevin (Marcina), Juan and Lauren Garner, great-grandchildren, Amari Garner-Philips, Shelby, Logan and Andrea Garner; nephew Michael Johnson (Tanya); nieces, Dr. Robyn Johnson, and Danielle Smith (Eric); sister-in-law, Linda Johnson and Wanda Johnson; great-nieces, Kloe and Perri Johnson and Ryan Smith; great-nephews, Luke and Josh Johnson and Drew Smith, cousins and a host of relatives and friends.

She will be missed by all.
