Obituary for Sophia Menelva Blount

Sophia Menelva Blount was born on June 27th, 1933 in Friendship, Upper Demerara, Guyana. She was the third of seven children, born from the union of the late Theophilus and Rose Thompson. Her elementary education began at Muritaro Primary School. Sophia committed her life to Christ at a very tender age, and was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, at the Goodhope Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Sophia grew up in Goodhope, Upper Demerara where she met the love of her life, Charles Wreford Blount. After a short courtship, Charles proposed to her, and they were united in holy matrimony on December 28, 1949. Out of that union, eight children; Carlton, Chalwyn, Jules, Judy, Leslie, Rena, Yulena and Angelina were born. She was happily married to Charles until his untimely passing on February 9th, 1987.

After the birth of their third child, Sophia and Charles relocated to Linden, Guyana. Sophia was very passionate about sewing and started a business as a seamstress. She was well known for her work and had clientele from both near and far. Business boomed, and Sophia worked relentlessly, day and night to keep up with the demands of her quickly rising customer base. She opened her very own sewing school where she taught young women the art of sewing. Sophia would sometimes hire some of these young women as her assistants. She prided herself for sewing, and sometimes designing for entire bridal and wedding parties. She also designed and sewed dresses for contestants of beauty pageants. It was common for people to wait outside of Sophia’s home when they get word of her dressing a bridal party. It was a treat to get a glimpse of the well-dressed bride and her wedding party.

Despite her many successes, Sophia made the bold decision to move to the USA in 1984. In the USA, she worked as a nanny and took care of her grandchildren.

Sophia was a loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother. She was a God-fearing woman who loved the LORD. She was kind, soft spoken and tremendously loved and cherished her family. She was humorous and was an absolute joy to be around. She enjoyed spending time at home with her family, and listening to gospel music by her favorite artiste, Jim Reeves.

Sophia departed this life peacefully on the morning of December 5th, 2022 with her daughters, Judy and Rena, and granddaughter, Noelanda by her side. She will be deeply missed and leaves to cherish her memory, her sisters, Winifred Kissoon and Juliet Giles, her children, Carlton Blount (Maisie), Chalwyn Blount, Jules Blount, Judy Kennedy (John), Leslie Blount (Jennifer), Rena Wagstaff, Yulena Corrica (Selwyn), Angelina Edmonds (Maurice), Horace Lynch-Blount (Sholanda), thirty grandchildren, thirty six great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren, plus a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sophia was preceded in death by her parents, Theophilus and Rose Thompson, husband, Charles Wreford Blount, brothers, Albert Thompson and Dennis Thompson, sisters, Ruth Richards, Leah Alexander and Jane Thompson, stepbrothers, Harold Thompson and Herman Thompson. We thank God for this wonderful gift to the body of Christ. Life will never be the same without Sophia. She will be greatly missed.
