Obituary for Sunday Nwankwo Ogbonna

Elder Sunday Nwankwo Ogbonna was the oldest son of the late Chief David Ogbonna and late Mrs. Oduagu Ogbonna of Ihieorji, Aba in Abia State. He grew up under the auspices of his loving and very supportive, cultural father where he learned in ins and outs of the Ngwa culture. After his primary school education, he gained admission to Adventist High School in 1953 (the very first set of students called the AHS pioneers). After graduation, he started his teaching career first with the Seventh-day Adventist school and later on, at Apostolic Grammar school Aba. Shortly after, he left for the United States of America for further education.

He was in the States when the Nigerian civil war started and was disconnected from his family and loved ones but managed to get his young wife over before it ended. Their reunion produced two beautiful daughters – Nnenna (Nene) and Uloma (Chuchu). At the completion of his studies, he and family returned to Nigeria where he took a job as a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State.

While in Nigeria, he became involved in church affairs; the spokesperson for the betterment of not only his extended large family but his community of Ihieorji and also politics. He was incredibly proud of his Ngwa heritage and was a founding member of many Ngwa and Igbo organizations in the United States. He was larger than life. His booming laugh was constantly heard at home, at work, and at all events he attended due to zest for life. He was a passionate leader that pushed all those around him to excellence due to his calling as a teacher, both in Nigeria and in America. He was never afraid to share his knowledge and teach others so they could achieve their goals and succeed. He loved to dance, always leading the Washington DC Ngwa collective at cultural events. Elder Sunday also loved to sing in his natural baritone voice, a skill he honed as a choir member at Adventist High School, and SDA Mitchellville Church. He was a kindhearted and generous human being that served God by loving his friends, neighbors, and community.

Elder Sunday Ogbonna was an amazing son, a wonderful loving husband, and the best father to his children. He was a man who both loved and was committed to his extended family and friends who he valued above all else.

He is preceded in death by loving wife of 43 years, Nwangaji Caroline, his parents, brothers Promise, Monday, sisters Nnenna and Rose. May their memories be eternal.

He leaves behind to mourn him Nnenna and Uloma, a host of nieces and nephew, in-laws other relatives and friends. Above all he was a servant of God and obedient heavenly son, he wanted nothing more than to learn how to follow His commands and prayed daily to be a Servant of God.
