Obituary for Walter Russell Pittman

Walter R. Pittman entered peacefully into eternal rest July 20, 2023, at Holy Cross Hospital. He was born to the late Ethel Lee Pittman-Peoples and Nathaniel Mayo, January 29, 1940, in Enfield, North Carolina. He was the first of eleven children, and attended Inborden School in Enfield, North Carolina. He later relocated to Washington D.C. where he continued his education at Dunbar Sr. High School.

In 1960 he met and married his wife of sixty two years, Shirley M. Pittman on August 5, 1961.  Billy, as he was affectionately known to his family and friends, was a hard-working, determined man, and he made his dreams come true.   He was baptized at North Englewood Baptist Church in North Englewood, Md. and later. Joined Florida Avenue Baptist Church. In 1972 he started “Pittman Security.

Walter was proceeded in death by his grandparents: Fred Pittman Sr., Carrie T. Pittman, and Mary B. Pittman; his father: Nathaniel Mayo, and his mother: Ethel Lee Pittman-Peoples; his siblings: Edward, Robert Lee, Douglas, Jackie Peoples; and father and mother in-law: Edward Evans and Delores Evans, and a sister in law Mildred Scott whom preceded in death.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife: Shirley Pittman; children: Doreen Scott-Calvin, Sharron Pittman-Brice (Rodney), Tyrone Pittman (Brandy), Mona-Lisa Pittman and Kamia Pittman. He lived to see five generations, nine grand-children, seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. His siblings: McKever Peoples, Jr., Darnell Peoples, Rickey Peoples, Theodore Peoples, Carrie L. Harrison, Terry Peoples-Stewart, Lendore Tillery, Christine Sledge; sister In-laws: Carolyn T. Peoples, Sylvia H. Peoples, Jeanette Johnson, Viola Edwards, Corrine Gilbert, Dorothy Willis; and sister n law whom preceded in death Mildred Scott, one Brother-in-law: Isaiah “Sonny” Harrison; one uncle: Tuner “Sonny” Pittman, NJ; one aunt, Hattie B. Henderson; D.C.; special cousin: Charles “Pop” Nicholson, NC; and a host of other relatives and friends we’ll all remember Walter Russell Pittman with love.
