William Leon Fairley, affectionately known as “Leon” was born February 18, 1946, to Mary Ellen Fairley in Maxton, North Carolina. His great grandmother and grandparents had a major role in raising him. As a child, he enjoyed riding a horse-drawn wagon to town with his great grandmother to sell eggs and vegetables she grew in her garden. William attended Saint George United Methodist Church, during his youth.

William graduated from R. B. Dean High School in Maxton, NC where he also played baseball. After graduating from high school in 1964, he headed to Washington, DC.

William met and married the love of his life, M. Michele Washington, July 10, 1970. He loved his wife and sons and was a great provider for his family.

William and Michele attended Faith Bible Church in Washington, DC. He dedicated his life to Christ in his later years. They were blessed with two ambitious sons, Perry L. Washington and Leonard Chaz Fairley. The couple lived in Washington, DC and later moved to Upper Marlboro, MD.

William worked as a baker for Ottenberg. Wonder and Giant Bakeries for over 30 years until his retirement. He was an outstanding worker and a member of the Baker’s Union.

William and his wife traveled the United States before he retired. After retiring, he liked to spend time watching the news on MSNBC, Western movies and sports on TV. HIs favorite sport was basketball and his favorite player, Lebron James. After his wife passed, he raised Chaz from 8 years old until he left for college.

William was a quiet and polite gentleman. He opened and closed car doors for women. He enjoyed helping and doing work for people; often without asking for one cent.

He was preceded in death by his wife (M. Michele), mother (Mary Ellen Noland) and brother (Len Edward).

William leaves to cherish his memories: His sons -Perry L. Washington (Jacqueline) and Leonard Chaz Fairley, granddaughter-Kayla Washington, brother-Fredrick Douglass Fairley (Debra), niece -Kesha Fairley, nephews- Fredrick Douglass Fairley Jr, and Len Edward Fairley II, aunt -Annie L. Fairley, sisters-in-law-Dr. Evelyn Johnson-Taylor, Sherryl L. Hanna (Ron), Veronica D. Hunt (Doug), D’Lois McMillan (Roger), brothers-in-law-Sivester Washington (Velvaline), Ervin Washington, three sister-cousins-Channie F. Johnson, Mazell G. Johnson (William) and Mable Cain-Gresham, many beloved family members, friends and a dedicated goddaughter-Pamela Tucker.
