William (Billy) Gray passed away on May 6, 2023 at Howard University Hospital after a long illness. He was born on May 16, 1940 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late George Walter Gray and Alma Williams Gray. He was raised in Washington, District of Columbia and educated in the public school system. He proudly served in the US Air Force for four years. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin University with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. He was employed as an accountant by the federal government for 38 years at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He received numerous service awards during his tenure with the federal government.

He married Deloris Brewington in November, 1966 and three children were born to this union, which ended in divorce in 1984. He was predeceased by his son, Garrick William Gray, his brother, Walter Gray and a sister, Selma Lee.

His favorite sport was tennis and he excelled at it and played frequently at the Turkey Thicket tennis courts in his neighborhood. He participated in many local tournaments and was well known among his peers. Another favorite hobby was photography. During his retirement, he traveled extensively to countries in South America and Africa and used his photography skills to capture beautiful landscapes. He also collected many native artifacts from his travels. He studied the French language and became so fluent that he read history books and novels written in this language as a hobby.

He is survived by his son, William Lamar Gray, Jr., of Washington, D.C., daughter, Veronica Dee Gray-Adgerson of Upper Marlboro, Md., sister, Constance Moody of Springfield, Va., two grandchildren, Rajean Adgerson and Rodney Adgerson Jr. of Upper Marlboro, Md., one great grandson, Ramel Stephens, Jr. of Upper Marlboro, Md. and aunt, Helen Williams of Florida and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 3rd, from 12:30 PM - 2 PM at J.B. Jenkins Funeral Home at 7474 Landover Road, Hyattsville, MD 20785. The Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
